Our Science & Philosophy

Innovation has lacked in the beard industry for decades.

It's more of the same stuff, just different labels...until now.

SmartBeard key differentiator is that our products contains over 90% in DHT-Safe fatty acids (good for beard growth) while eliminating dry skin, rough hair,

and annoying itchiness.

Typical beard products have less than 20%

in these growth loving acids.

What is DHT?

DHT stands for dihydrotestosterone, the testosterone responsible for facial hair. Unlike hair on your scalp, facial hair is androgenic and needs DHT to thrive and grow.

Natural oils commonly used in beard products generally contain 85% - 99% in natural DHT-blocking fatty acids and components. Cancer research uncovered that specific C12-C18 fatty acids can inhibit natural DHT-levels up to 50%. Lower DHT levels could contribute to patchy, slow growing beards.

Using highly scientific and evaluation processes, we meticulously formulated each product to keep these natural DHT-blocking components below 10% -- ensuring you have the highest quality beard products that minimally impact your beard's growth.

What's the difference between DHT-Safe & DHT-Free?

Short and simple. If  you ever see "DHT-Free" on a product label -- beware.

"DHT-Free" is a marketing term and not 100% factual.  All natural oils, except for some hydrocarbons, have natural DHT-blocking fatty acids at some level.

"DHT-Safe" is a term that indicates natural DHT-blocking components are less than 10% of the final formula.

DHT-blocking factors we considered when developing our formulas include fatty acids composition, oil composition, oil constitutes, active ingredient composition, essential oils, and other known DHT blocking indicators.

We are committed to updating and improving our formulas as new research uncovers new discoveries in DHT and facial hair science.

Is Argan or Cupuacu considered DHT-Unsafe?

Due to their fatty acid profiles, ingredients like Shea Butter, Tea Tree oil, Argan or even Cupuacu Butter are generally considered DHT-Unsafe in the blogging world. But, It’s important to note, however, they’re only DHT-unsafe when they’re used alone -- or in high ratios.

In the proper ratios, however, natural DHT-blocking fatty acids can be diluted to greatly reduce their impact. In fact, our Beard Balm contains less total DHT-blocking fatty acids than the profile of Jojoba Oil -- which is widely considered DHT-safe and benchmark. And, we did this without affecting overall effectiveness, quality, or fragrance.

My current beard product does not indicate if its DHT-Safe. Should I be concerned?

The short answer is yes.

Traditional beard products often focus on scent vs. function in most cases. And, companies usually do not consider DHT when formulating beard products.

To ensure your growth is not hindered, you must be pro-active. SmartBeard's products greatly reduces your exposure to DHT blocking factors.

Our 4 Core Principals

Innovate, Do Not Duplicate

SmartBeard has been two years in the making, over 5 cosmetic scientists, and over 168 prototypes. We asked what was the main problem with the beard grooming industry and discovered duplication is why there has not been any innovation.

The market has been so consumed by fragrance that science became more of an afterthought. Instead of focusing on buzzword ingredients and superficial fragrances, we got back to core of why men use beard products in the first place -- to have the best beard on the planet as natural as possible.

We Only Create DHT-Safe Products

We Only Use Non-GMO, Cold-Pressed, Unrefined Oils

This ensures you're getting all the "good stuff" oils can offer.

Most beard company's opt for refined or highly refined oils that's been expeller pressed or solvent extracted to save cost at the expense of quality.

Meadowfoam Seed Oils is the only oil NOT cold-pressed, as cold pressed Meadowfoam Seed Oil is high in phytosterols that are potent DHT-blockers.

We Always Use Active Ingredients For Results

Oils only do a great job for skin and hair. But, often, these oils are not enough.

SmartBeards pairs highly vetted active ingredients into each product through a vigorous testing and research process. All of our active ingredients are Non-GMO and are used in specific ratios proven for results -- whereas others use them just for label appeal .
